Commercial Navigation Chart For The Pacific Northwest

A nice and detailed navigational chart of the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Strait of Georgia, covering the area northwest of Whidbey Island and east of Victoria, Vancouver Island. Produced in 1967 for the U.S. Department of Commerce, this is the 14th iteration of this chart. Due to the heavy commercial and military use by the United States and Canada, the map contains information pertinent to both maritime navigation and legal considerations.

The map is careful to note several important data points for ships. Most importantly, the depth of the water has been measured in fathoms to ensure navigational safety in these waterways. Additionally, the map includes several important zones of demarcation, notably national borders, prohibited anchorages, no dumping zones, and areas with an active naval presence.

On the far right side is an enlarged inset of Drayton Harbor, a hub for maritime activities like shipping and fishing. The inclusion of this historically prosperous commercial port reflects its continued importance in maritime activity in the region.

As a heavily trafficked commercial area, this chart serves multiple purposes, balancing navigational data with legal directives to ensure that shipping can be conducted safely and legally.
