Description
Original antique map of the town of Hempstead, on Long Island, from the Beers's Long Island Atlas, published in 1873.
The map is brilliantly detailed, with landowners shown for every plot and all major points of interest marked. Streets are named, and individual buildings are shown.
The town was first settled by the Dutch in 1644 and was named after the town of Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire, England. The town was initially a farming community, but it gradually developed into a residential area as the population grew. In the 19th century, the town saw an influx of new residents, and many new businesses were established. By 1900, Hempstead was a thriving community with a growing population and a diverse economy.
