Description

Altadena Property Owners Group Rails Against Pasadena Land Grab -- We Cannot Stay As We Are!

Fascinating map of Pasadena, Altadena and neighboring communities, published by Altadena Property Owners' Association.

The map provides details (in two shades of blue) illustrating the multiple areas formerly within Altadena, which had been annexed by Pasdena over the preceding 4 decades, beginning in 1904, with most of the areas annexed separatetly identified with dates of annexastion.

Published in late March or early April 1946, 3 additional areas, shown in red as "Under Attack" and "Imminent Peril", identify the next 3 areas of Altadena which were targeted by Pasadena in April, August and October of 1946.

On the verso, with notes such as "Eternal Vigilance is the Price of Liberty", the Altadena Property Owners' Association lays out its case, including a detailed history of prior annexations, a description of propert tax base loses, note that Pasadena has

. . . a strategy of annexation of County properties as collateral for growing bond indebtedness, fora city faced with mounting public debs and shrinking property valuations.  It is the strategy of Pasadena city politicians faced with the toll of their mistakes and seeking Altadena as a victim to cover them.

While the basic premise of opposing Pasadena annexation may have been sensible local policy in the 1940s, there is some irony to the statistics -- the loss of $477,565 in tax base in 2022, would probably be less half the value of any single house in the impacted areas in 2022.

Rarity

The map is very rare.

Not in OCLC.  We note a single copy at the Huntington Library (noting that Altadena's objections were unsucessful).
