Description

Important and extremely rare map of Hungary published in Rome in 1595.

Extending from "Wiennaward" (Vienna) and Zagreb in the west to the Olt River and Transylvania and Transaplina Hungary, the map provides a magnificently detailed treatment of Hungary, including over a dozen coats of arms of various regions.  Along the lower Danube and its major tributaries, many battle scenes are shown, along with other scenes showing evidence ot the ongoing wars between the Holy Roman Empire and the the Ottoman Empire, with towns delinated as Christian or Muslim controlled regions noted by crosses or crescents atop churches.  Historical battles dating back to 1409, 1439 and 1456 are shown east of Belgrade on the Danube.  Other dates of important battles include Komarno (1594) and the Siege of Szigetvar (1566).

After protracted negotiations in Vienna an anti-Ottoman pact between Zsigmond Báthori, prince of Transylvania, and Rudolf I, king of Hungary, was finally agreed in 1595. In this war the armies under Báthori triumphed overwhelmingly against the forces of the Sultan at Gyurgyevo (Giurgiu, Wallachia) on October 29, 1595. For a moment it seemed that it might be possible to chase the Ottoman Empire out of the heart of Europe, but this was not to happen for almost another century.

This brief moment spurred the production of several maps, including a map by of theologian and philosopher Nicander Philippus Fundanus, originally from the Netherlands but resident in Rome.  The upper left part part of the map includes the coats-of-arms of Sicily, Castile, Leon, Aragon, and the Kingdom of Naples, amongst others.
