Description

The Garden of Eden. Folio Edition.

Fine original antique map showing the uncovering of the world following the Biblical Flood, with Mt. Ararat (site of the landing of Noah's Arc), the Lan of Nod, and Mesopotamia just being unveiled. This uncommon aquatint is from the 1830A suite of Edward Quin's An Historical Atlas; In A Series Of Maps Of The World As Known At Different Periods, in which all of the maps are in folio sizes, unlike later printings.

This remarkable scene dates the Flood to 2348 B.C. using interpreted dates from the bible, which is akin to what modern Creationists label the date as c. 2420 B.C. The use of clouds spreading away from the Garden of Eden provides a powerful interpretation of this myth, and shows one of the foundational events of Judeo-Christianity from a new perspective.

This print was published as part of a very rare series of twenty-one charts showing the growth of the world from the Great Flood all the way to 1828 when the final chart in the series was designed. Slowly, as more land is discovered, the clouds on the maps part and more and more of the world is visible.
