Description

Fine view of Florence from the Arno River, from the west, based on an earlier engraving by Giuseppe Zocchi.

The view was drawn from a point on Arno near Palazzo Frescobaldi, looking across the Arno toward the Ponte Santa Trinita, Ponte Vecchio and of the Torre di Arnolfo and the top of the Basilica di Santa Croce di Firenze in the distance.

Giuseppe Zocchi (1711 or 1717 - 1767) was an important Italian painter and printmaker, who is best known for a series of fine engraved views of Florence, Italy published in 1744  (Scelta di XXIV vedute delle principali contrade, piazze, chiese, e palazzi della citta di Firenze).

Zocchi's views were copied in London by several engravers, including Robert Sayer and this smaller view for The Geographical Dictionary.
