Description

Rare early railroad map of California, published by the Railroad Commission of the State of California and printed by H.S Crocker & Company in San Francisco.

The map identifies 16 railroads operating in the State of California, with colored routes for each.

The present map has a manuscript addition, showing a continuation of the Southern Pacific From Santa Margarita to Pismo (in pencil) and along the coast south to Gaviota (also in Pencil) and finally connecting to the existing line of the Southern Pacific at Elwood.

Rarity

This would seem to be the earliest surviving example of the map.

We locate a single copy of the map in the collection of the Beinecke Library at Yale.

Rumsey/Stanford holds a later edition (completed to November 15, 1891).  The Huntington Library holds a later edition (completed to March 30th, 1896).  Yale holds a later edition (completed to January 1st 1900).
