Water and the Early Development of Santa Monica -- "Rapid Development Will Flow"

Fantastic early Santa Monica, California real estate promotional broadside, celebrating the arrival of water from the Los Angeles Aqueduct to Santa  Monica in 1921, a milestone in the ability to develop residential communities in the region, drawn by an artist "Bailey."

The title of the broadside is likely not coincidental.  "The Coming of the Water" was the name of a lecture given by William Mulholland in 1909 at the University of Southern California, College of Liberal Arts in Los Angeles.

The map incorporates a bird's-eye view of Santa Monica and Pacific Palisades, with particular focus on the so-called Palisades Tract, bounded by Montana Avenue, Ocean Avenue, Adelaide Drive, and San Vicente Boulevard. The line of the aqueduct an be seen descending from the yet to be constructed Stone Canyon Reservoir down into the Santa Monica area and then proceeding north towards Topanga Canyon, which is named at the top right.

The broadside also provides information regarding the yet to be constructed Stone Canyon Reservoir and Dam, shown at the top right.  Engineering adn other details of the project are given, along with an estimated cost and completion date in 1921.  The Dam would not actually be completed until 1924.

The specific focus on the supply of freshwater to the area illustrates the stark issues facing L.A. during the "Chinatown" era, and relates to problems still faced by Southern California today.

Frank H. Ayres is listed as the agent for Palisades and Santa Monica Property.

At the bottom of the broadside is a wonderful pointed line: "This is Los Angeles' Front Yard - Your Yard - America's Natural Playground on the Pacific - Be Proud of It - Preserve It - Enjoy It - Join in the Activities that will Make It World Famous."
