Description

Fascinating paper hygrometer, an instrument for measuring water vapor in the air, made by an unidentified Italian maker, probably around 1900.

Overall the piece is composed of a number of joined chromolithographed pieces of thick paper. The instrument indicates humidity with the movement of the monk's arm. The mechanism for moving the arm is located inside the body of the monk. The monk points at a column labeled "Secco" at the top (Italian for "dry") and "Pioggia" at the bottom (Italian for "rain"). We have not determined if the arm continues to function as originally intended, though there is no obvious damaged to it.

Given the fragile nature of the object, it is in extremely impressive condition.
