Fine George III Celestial Globe.
Nice example of Bardin's 12-inch celestial globe, manufactured in London in about 1800.
The globe shows Ptolemaic, non-Ptolemaic, and southern constellations in classical shapes. These consist of mythological characters, animals, and scientific instruments. Stars are shown in six different orders of magnitude depending on the size and the Flamsteed designations of the star classes within a constellation are given. The ecliptic, zodiac, and equatorial lines are all shown.
The horizon band has an engraved paper calendar and zodiac graduated in degrees with wind directions.
Condition Description
12-inch table globe composed of twenty-four printed and original hand-colored engraved globe gores with two polar calottes. Encompassed by brass meridian ring and contemporary oak furniture. Small areas of discrete abrasion and some overall toning to the globe. One lower stretcher connecting to leg with a repaired break. Minor worming to furniture.
