Impressive Chart of the Pacific Ocean Depicting a Thrilling Circumnavigation

Dynamic chart of the mid-Pacific Ocean from the French-edition of Anson’s bestselling voyage account. It includes voyage tracks of Anson’s Centurion and the ship he stalked, the Spanish treasure galleon, Nuestra Señora de la Covadonga.

The chart shows the width of the ocean at 39.5° of latitude, flanked by the coasts of California and Mexico to the east and the Philippines and Japan to the west. The long, thin chart is blanketed with an intricate pattern of rhumb lines, which form a striking circle in the sea.

A few islands are included on the chart, but the main draw are the three ships’ tracks that dot the waters. Route “a” is that of the Covadonga from Manila to Acapulco, “b” is the Covadonga on its way back to Manila, and “c” is the Centurion. Where track “b” meets the Cabo Espiritu Santo of the Philippines is where the battle with Anson took place.

The chart was based on a similar one created by Robert William Seale for the official first edition of Anson’s voyage, A Voyage Round the World, first published in London in 1748. This French version of the map was by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin, who added the decorative cartouche in the upper right corner. Previous cartouches had been a simple box. This map appeared in the 1751 Amsterdam edition of the account, published by Arstée & Merkus.

Anson’s circumnavigation (1740-44) and voyage account

In 1739, resentment over Spanish raids of British ships in the Caribbean sparked the War of Jenkin’s Ear, which would widen into the larger War of Austrian Succession. The Commissioners of the British Admiralty planned a global strategy to harass Spanish trade and weaken its over-stretched navy and merchant marine. Anson’s voyage was part of this strategy. He set out in 1740 with a squadron of six ships and 1,900 men.

By 1743, Anson had crossed the Pacific after raiding the west coast of South America. Prior to crossing he had waited off the Mexican coast for the Acapulco galleon, full of silver, to appear, but he only succeeded in blocking the ship from leaving port. Meanwhile, he had also lost five of his ships and 1,400 of his men, primarily to scurvy; only his own ship, Centurion, remained intact.

After repairing at Macao, Anson let Chinese officials know that he was headed for Britain; in reality, he sailed to the Philippines to await the entrance of the Acapulco galleon. Remarkably, considering the voyage prior to that point, the Centurion took the Nuestra Señora de la Covadonga with only light casualties.

The publication of the Voyage round the World

Anson returned home rich and quickly became famous as well, a bright spot in an otherwise dismal war devoid of triumphant victories. Named a Commissioner of the Admiralty, Anson set about arranging the publication of his experiences in the Pacific. The work was written by the Centurion’s chaplain, Richard Walter, and Benjamin Robins, a Fellow of the Royal Society and a military engineer. It took four years to compile Anson’s and his officer’s papers and a Voyage round the World finally debuted in May 1748.

The account was immensely popular; it was published in quarto with 42 plates, while a simultaneously published octavo edition, with only three plates also flooded book sellers’ shops. The charts for the account, three in all, were engraved by Richard William Seale. Among other clients, he engraved for the Universal Spectator, in which the Anson expedition was serialized after it returned in 1744.

The Anson account was one of the bestsellers of the eighteenth century; it appeared in at least sixteen editions in the eighteenth century alone. It was also published in several languages, including Dutch, French, German, Russian, Italian, and Swedish.

Jacques Nicolas Bellin Biography

Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was among the most important mapmakers of the eighteenth century. In 1721, at age 18, he was appointed hydrographer (chief cartographer) to the French Navy. In August 1741, he became the first Ingénieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine (the French Hydrographic Office) and was named Official Hydrographer of the French King.

During his term as Official Hydrographer, the Depot was the single most active center for the production of sea charts and maps, including a large folio format sea-chart of France, the Neptune Francois. He also produced a number of sea-atlases of the world, e.g., the Atlas Maritime and the Hydrographie Francaise. These gained fame, distinction, and respect all over Europe and were republished throughout the 18th and even in the succeeding century.

Bellin also came out with smaller format maps such as the 1764 Petit Atlas Maritime, containing 580 finely detailed charts. He also contributed many of the maps for Bellin and contributed a number of maps to the 15-volume Histoire Generale des Voyages of Antoine François Prévost or simply known l'Abbe Prevost.

Bellin set a very high standard of workmanship and accuracy, thus gaining for France a leading role in European cartography and geography. Many of his maps were copied by other mapmakers of Europe.
