Sport With Rod and Gun in Southern California

Rare Santa Fe Railroad Southern California promotional map and brochure, promoting recreational fishing and hunting in Southern California.

Extending from the San Diego area to Santa Barbara and southern Kern and San Bernardino Counties. the map is overprinted in red to illustrate dozens of types of hunting and fishing opportunities, including freshwater fish, surf fish, ocean fish, as well as numerous species of birds and animals, from Catalina and the Channel Islands to the High Desert and from the Ensenada, B.C. area to the mountains of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.

The railroad line of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad is shown, with lines extending south to San Diego, Escondido, and Fallbrook, east to Redlands, San Jacinto and Temecula, and north to Mojave, Barstow and points east.

The map is embellished with numerous illustrations of fishing and hunting scenes, the majority of which are taken around the Hotel Del Coronado and Otay Lakes areas of San Diego County, with the Otay Lakes images being quite unusual for the period (the Hotel Del Coronado was, at the time, one of the most famous destination resort hotels in America).

The verso includes an extensive text description of wild life opportunities, with additional sport fishing images at Catalina, Coronado and duck hunting on Otay Lake.

Rarity
