Description

Iconic large map of Canada, drawn by Doris Horwood.

The map theme is the life of the indigenous people before the arrival of Europeans. The names of tribes are given, along with several paragraphs about the tribes - their culture, hardships, settlements, ways of life and personalities. Along the left, right and bottom edges are stylized color illustrations of North American Indians, with their tribes and noteworthy characteristics listed below. At the bottom of the poster are color illustrations of canoes, with their names/materials above or below and text at the bottom of the group of canoes explaining their importance and use in North American Indian societies. |

The map was widely distributed in Canadian Schools in the 1960s and 1970s.  The map depicts how various indigenous people lived, hunted, built canoes and produced food prior to European arrival.

Doris Horwood was a commercial artist in an era when Canada had very few female illustrators. She was the only female in a membership of 6,000, according to an interview with her daughter (Sarnia Journal, April 25, 2016) .Horwood was a graduate of the Banff School of Fine Arts. She worked for Associated Advertising Ltd. in Toronto.

The first  edition was printed by Associated Advertising in 1964.  A special edition was produced in 1967 with the Canadian Centennial seal.
