Description

Rare 1793 Russian-language edition of Jean Janvier's double hemispheric world map "Mappe-Monde ou Description Du Globe Terrestre", originally published in 1762.

The map appeared in the Saint Petersburg-published atlas: Новый атлас, или собрание карт всех частей земного шара, почерпнутый из разных сочинителей и напечатанный в Санкт-Петербурге для употребления юношества в 1793 году при Горном училище. [A new atlas, or collection of maps of all parts of the globe, drawn from various writers and printed in St. Petersburg for youth use in 1793 at the Mining College.]

This atlas was far in advance of what was typically available in terms of world atlases in Russia in the 18th century.

Connections between French-mapmakers and the Russian Empire had been close since Joseph Nicolas Delisle had moved to Russia in 1726 and this map is an important product of that ongoing relationship.

In North America, the map includes the following toponyms (in Russian): Michigan, New Orleans, Carolina, Santa Fe, New Mexico, New Albion, New England, Boston, Cape Mendocino, Cape Monterey, etc.
