Description

Fantastic Soviet map of the world focusing on transnational organizations, particularly those that were seen to be aligned against the "Countries of Socialism" (СТРАНЫ СОЦИАЛИЗМА) and Warsaw Pact (Организация Варшавского Договора).

The map is effectively an overprint edition (the large block letters in blue in red being the overprint) of the standard large format Soviet political map of the world.

As noted in the lower left, the map was revised and amended in 1970 by the Political Department of the Soviet Naval Forces and Naval Educational Institutions, meaning that it was classified at some point, possibly even as late as 1991. It shows (in blue and red) information that was not available for ordinary Soviet citizens -- only government or military agencies -- an overview of the disposition of the army forces of the late Cold War during Brezhnev’s regime.

The map is overprinted with Political Information: 14 socialist allies (in red, including the countries in the Warsaw pact) and “enemies of the USSR” including: NATO, CENTO, ASPAC, ASEAN, ANZUS, SEATO - in blue.

Additional overprinted information covers the current USA armed forces, with the precise number of soldiers in 18 countries and data on the naval US bases, with a total number of 1,400 bases mentioned.

While the base map was printed in thousands of copies, the overprinted version was probably made in no more than a handful.
