Description

Fine view of Acapulco, its harbor, fortifications and town, based upon a painting by Johannes Vingboons circa 1650.

Vingboons paints Acapulco from a hilltop vantage point looking out to sea. Several galleons are pictured approaching or anchored in the harbor.

Johannes Vingboons's much‐copied watercolorsof Mexico City, Acapulco and Veracruz, are based on drawings by Juan Gómez de Trasmonte and Adrián (Adriaan) Boot made in New Spain before 1628.  The views are generally considered accurate depictions of these cities in the early seventeenth century.  The original sketches are not known to survive, however, nor has the route by which they reached the Netherlands at a time when the Spanish and the Dutch were at war been satisfactorily explained.
