Description

Terrific chart the Western Pacific, focusing on the region contiguous to the California & Baja California coast. The map extends from San Francisco Bay in the North (naming Pt. Reyes and the Farallone Islands) to Acapulco. In California, Pt. Ano Nuevo, Pinas, Concepcion, Farollon de Lobos, Conversion, San Pedro, San Diego, San Bernardo and Santa Catalina are shown. This is also one of the more interesting 18th maps of the Channel Islands area. The map is intended to illustrate the Western course of the Manilla Galleon trade. It tracks the course of the Centurion from its approach to the California Coastline, where it would have been within view of land as far north as Point Concepcion and the Channel Islands, coasting south past Cabo San Luca to Acapulco, before heading west across the Pacific. The Manilla Galleon trade was very active during the middle portion of the 18th Century and played a significant role in the Spanish decision to extend its mission system into Upper California, ulimately leading to the charting of the coastline and bays of San Francisco, San Diego and Monterrey during the latter part of the 18th Century.
