Description

The New Republic of America

Rare separately issued map of the United States, published by the Freres Lotter.

While the title is in French, the vast majority of the notes and nomenclature of this curious map is in English.

In this rare map, the United States is referred to as "the New Republic of America" or "The Thirteen United Provinces." One of the other interesting features of the map is the reference to Delaware as "The Counties Newcastle, Kent and Sussex, South of the Delaware," rather than the more traditional name "The Three Lower Counties on the Delaware River."

The map is very rare on the market. We locate only a single example offered in a dealer catalog in the past 30 years (Art Source International, December 1993, Item 142 -- $1500).

The map is a fine depiction of the newly minted United States, with fine details on either side of the Mississippi River, including Indian names, early forts, roads, etc. One of the more interesting features is the identification, in English, of "French Route or the Western Indians," extending west from Fort Tessier to Maha, a reference for which we can find no information.
