Description

Fine plan of the harbor and town of Rio De Janeiro, illustrating the French siege of 1710 and 1711.

During the Spanish War of Succession, Portugal became an ally of England and therefore an enemy of France. As a result, French ships tried twice to invade Rio de Janeiro. The first siege in 1710 was not successful. In 1711, René Duguay-Trouin, with 6000 men in 17 ships, managed to occupy the city for two months, looting the city and spreading fear and destruction among the local population. Finally General Antônio de Albuquerque Coelho repelled the invaders.
