Description

Fine example of one of the earliest obtainable views of San Fransciso Bay, from the Atlas Pittoresque volume of Abel du Petit-Thouars's Voyage autour du monde sur la fregate Venus, published in Paris in 1841.

The work is one of the rarest and most sumptuously illustrated works of the 19th Century.

The voyage of the French frigate Venus was one of the first official scientific explorations by the French in California. The complete set, including the Atlas, are extremely rare and this is the second time we have ever seen or handled this marvelous view of San Francisco Bay, engraved by Menard and lithographed by Sabatier in Paris.

One of the earliest obtainable views of San Francisco Bay and certainly among the rarest.
