Description

Early map of the United States, engraved by master engraver Amos Doolittle for The Abridgement of Morse's American Universal Geography, published in Boston by Thomas & Andrews.

This rare map of the United States is one of the earliest printed map to incorporate an American Eagle, albeit relatively inartfully so.

The map is filled with interesting details, including American Indian tribes, early American forts and other unusual details.

The map pre-dates the establishment of Tennessee in 1795. North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia all extend to the Mississippi River. The lands of the Illinois Company, New Jersey Company, Army Lands and Wabash Company appear north of the confluence of the Mississippi River and Ohio River in modern day Illinois. Further east, G. Clark's Grant, Colonel Symms Grant and the Ohio Company Lands appear north of the Ohio, along with a primitive delineation of the 7 Ranges.

A fine example of this increasingly scarce map.
