Description

Extremely rare large format map of the Region around Washington DC and the Potomac, extending to Annarundel, Jefferson, Clark, Faquier, Culpepper and King George Counties. This is one of the rarest of all separately published commercial maps showing the progress of the war. In addition to its wonderful topographical and geographical details, it includes information on 34 Forts and multiple battlefields, including dates, positions of cannon and flags indicating the Confederate and Union positions. Engraved by PS Duval & Co. of Philadelphia. This is the second edition of the map, following the first edition of 1861. Stephenson 448 (33 forts listed) and 455 (34 forts listed). The Rumsey collection includes the 1862 edition. No other example located. The map has been archivally backed. There is some minor discoloration and soiling and a nickel sized loss at one fold near the Port Tobacco River and some other very small intersection breaks with a tiny amount of loss. One short repaired tear above the flag. The color remains quite nice and the map is generally quite presentable, given its rarity and size.
