Description

Rare early broadside map advertising the sale of a subdivided city block in the City of San Francisco on April 3, 1867 (?).

Maurice Dore & Co. was a San Francisco real estate borkerage firm which was active in development and sale of property in late 1860s and later branched out to other parts of the Bay Area. For instance, Stanford University holds a similar broadside advertising map for the sale of property in Menlo Park in the early 1870s.

The broadside map show the location of the map (bounded by Market Street, Van Ness Avenue, Franklin Street and Oak Street, in downtown San Francisco, only a few blocks south of the current Civic Center Plaza. The advertising for the sale includes a glowing report of the location and prospects of the land, credit terms available to the purchaser and assurances concerning the marketability of title to the property. A remarkable early promotional broadside.

Jos. Winterburn & Co. was active as a printer in San Francisco in the 1860s to 1890s. This is one of the earliest works we have been able to locate for Winterburn and the only map we have ever seen by this printer.
