Description

Promoting Residental Subdivisions Between Oil Fields

Striking view and promotional literature, promoting Poinsettia Square, a subdivision within Compton, offerd by the Long Beach Land Company in 1923.

The present image is very much a product of its time, with the two Long Beach Land Company subdivsions shown here in the midst of an area filled with oil derricks, including the properties of the Compton Oil Company, Union Oil Company and the Globe Oil Company, with dozens more derricks shown to the south toward Long Beach.

Situated between the Harbor Truck Boulevard and Long Beach Boulevard, the neighborhood was near the Pacific Electric Line immediately to the west, but curiously, the proximity to the Oil Fields was apparently deemed a more important selling point.

Described as "The Most Beautiful Subdivision in the Southland," the advertisement includes a striking birdeseye view style map showing the layout of the streets and plots within Los Angeles and the Compton area. The map features prominently the phrase "Famous Poinsettia Square" and advertises large lots starting at $950, with the option for easy terms.

The additional literature includes and original price list for the lots and a second promotional broadside.

The presence of oil company names like "Globe Oil Co." and "Oak Ridge Oil Co." indicates the importance of oil exploration and drilling in the area at that time, which was a significant factor in the economic development of Southern California.
