Rare Early Kentucky Medical School Diploma

A good example of this rare Medical School Diploma from Transylvania University, in Lexington, Kentucky.  The diploma matches several surviving examples from the 1820s.

Transylvania University is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning west of the Allegheny Mountains. Founded in 1780 as the Transylvania Seminary in a log cabin in Boyle County, Kentucky, it was moved to Lexington in 1789 and rechristened Transylvania University. It is regarded as the 16th oldest university in the United States and its Medical School was the first such school in the west.

In 1799, the medical school began under the guidance of Dr. Samuel Brown, a student of the renowned University of Edinburgh Medical School. It rapidly gained a reputation for excellence, attracting students from across the country.   The medical school remained open until 1859.
