Description

Produced Under The Direction of the "Father of Modern Washington"

Detailed map of the cities of Washington D.C. and Georgetown, illustrating the progress of road improvements in the decade after the Civil War, lithographed by J.F. Gedney.

Produced by the Board of Public Works, this detailed street plan shows the road improvements in the District of Columbia.

The map is hand colored to shown the different types of road surfaces:

  • Concrete (red)
  • wood (yellow)
  • stone (blue)

The remaining uncolored streets indicate that they are still made of dirt.

This chart was produced under the direction of Alexander Robey Shepherd, also known as "Boss Shepherd," head of the Board of Public Works from 1871-73 and later Governor of the District of Columbia from 1873-74. He is known by some as the "Father of Modern Washington."
