Description

Rare pictorial map promoting Clark's Tours in Guatemala.

The map is meticulously detailed, delineating railways, towns, and roads, including the Pan-American Highway. It also features illustrations of Guatemalans in traditional attire engaging in various activities. Additionally, it showcases the Mayan Inn at Santo Tomás Chichicastenango, a hotel founded by American expatriate Alfred S. Clark to accommodate western tourists visiting to experience the local culture and Mayan heritage.

Alfred S. Clark established his touring company in 1927, envisioning it as a conduit for Americans to explore the authentic village life of Guatemala and its remarkable Mayan ruins. The Mayan Hotel, opened by Clark in 1932 and depicted in this poster, continues to operate, outliving its founder who passed away in 1937.

The poster itself was produced by Litografía Byron Zadik, a Guatemalan print shop known for postcards and posters in the 1930s and '40s.
