Description

Scarce large pictorial Tourist Map in color subtitled The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan with pictographs identifying important sites.

Inset is a small map of International Boundaries for countries in the region showing Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran.

Fascinating map and guide pamphlet of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan including much of today's West Bank and Jerusalem. The verso includes city plans of Amman and Jerusalem.

The map features pictorial vignettes of important archaeological sites and monuments in the region, including the Dome of the Rock and Khirbet Qumran, the latter famously associated with the Dead Sea Scrolls. Also depicted is the famous rosette of Qasr Hisham, an important cultural treasure in Palestine.

Long before Jordan officially recognized the State of Israel, nowhere is Israel written on the map. This is also before the 1967 Six-Day War, at the conclusion of which Jordan had lost control of the West Bank (and Egypt temporarily lost the Sinai Peninsula).

There is no mention of Israel; the boundaries reflect the region prior to the Six Day War, with an "Armistice Line" surrounding the Jordanian Holy Land. However, the reality of the situation is addressed on the rear of the card folder in a paragraph stating:

Travel between Jordan and Israel: Only a one way crossing between Jordan and Israel is permitted. Visitors coming to Jordan via Israel will be allowed entry provided there is no valid Israeli visa affixed to their passports and provided they submit a certificate of church membership....

A key at the bottom of the map provides symbols for Towns, Villages, Antiquity Sites, International Boundaries, Railways, Wadi Beds etc.
