Description

This pictorial map, designed and published circa 1943 by Ernest Dudley Chase, combines whimsical artistry with cartographic traditions, creating an imaginative representation of a heart-shaped land dedicated to the theme of love. Chase, a renowned greeting card designer and pictorial mapmaker, infuses his artistic prowess into the map, blending the emotional appeal of greeting cards with the precision of map-making.

During the early 1940s, a period marked by global conflict and uncertainty, Chase's work offered a creative and lighthearted departure from the era's prevailing sentiments. His maps, particularly those depicting fictional realms like Loveland, provided a form of escapism and whimsy. Loveland, with its heart-shaped geography and endearing illustrations, is a testament to Chase's ability to transpose the familiar format of a map into a vessel for artistic expression and sentimentality.

The map is adorned with a decorative border and conventional map elements, all adhering to the overarching theme of love. The compass rose is composed of a cluster of hearts pierced by arrows, symbolizing the map's romantic motif. The clever labeling and imagery throughout the map further reinforce its thematic coherence.
