Description

Map of the Sea of Azov, published for the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society. The filthy residuum of the southern portion of the Sivash (Syvash) made the Sea of the Azov, "the Putrid Sea."

Sherard Osborn served in the Royal Navy in the Crimean War (1853-1856) and was promoted to post-captain in August 1855, commandeering the HMS Medusa in the Sea of Azov.
