Description

Vintage travel brochure of Kauai, the Garden Island, featuring a pictorial map by Ray Lanterman (1916-1994), an illustrator and resident of the state. Illustrations include children playing in Barking Sands, tourists at the Waimea Canyon and Kalalou lookouts, a man fishing with a net in Hanalei Bay, and a pineapple plantation.

Four inset maps list hotels and show the locations of tourist sites in the areas of Wailua-Kapaa, Lihue, Port Allen-Poipu, and Hanalei. Lyle Guslander's Coco Palms, a hotel destroyed and closed by Hurricane Iniki in 1992, is on the Wailua-Kapaa inset. In Hanalei, the only hotel listed is the Hanalei Plantation, also owned by Guslander, which became a Club Med in the 1970s and was then torn down for a failed condominium development. Not yet included is the Poipu Beach Hotel, which opened in 1966 as yet another resort in Guslander's Island Holidays hotel chain.

Other maps by Ray Lanterman for the Hawaii Visitors Bureau feature the islands of Maui and Hawaii.
