Description

This rare real estate promotion map, produced by Howard & Butterbaugh Land Company in 1922, captures a moment of urban development in the evolving landscape of West Hollywood. Located within the established West Hollywood district, this map demarcates 253 lots between Santa Monica Boulevard and Melrose Avenue, these two primary east-west thoroughfares, were important factors in the marketing of the tract.

During the 1920s, Hollywood was on the cusp of transformation. The incipient stages of the film industry marked a shift from its agrarian roots to a more urbanized locale. The Hollywood Scenic Tract, with accessibility to the Pacific Electric Railway on both Santa Monica Boulevard and Sherman Avenue, reflects the infrastructural adaptations accompanying this shift.

The tract offered views of the Santa Monica range extending to the San Bernardino and San Jacinto peaks. Its positioning provided a panoramic survey of Los Angeles and its adjoining regions. Additionally, the varied lot sizes within the tract, along with its proximity to the Pacific Electric Railway, were said to enhance its practical appeal.

The text makes reference to parallel Howard & Butterbaugh developments, such as the Hollywood Vista Tract. These were said to have witnessed considerable interest within a few months.
