This etching by Wenceslaus Hollar, dated 1645 and published by Ioannes Meysens, features a half-length portrait of Jerome Weston, 2nd Earl of Portland. He is depicted turned slightly to the right, gazing towards the viewer, wearing a detailed and ornate cloak with a prominent ruff collar and the Order of the Garter around his neck. His left hand rests on a table or ledge, while the background is filled with detailed cross-hatching to give depth to the figure.

Edme Mentelle (1730-1815), was a French geographer, historian and cartographer, a professor at the École Normale. With Conrad Malt-Brun he produced the Géographie mathématique, physique et politique de toutes les parties du monde (6 vols., published between 1803 and 1812). Cape Mentelle in south-west Australia was named after him by Nicolas Baudin.
