Description

Elegant Photographs of Monterey Cypresses

A group of four original coastal view photographs of Monterey, California. The photographs are by C. W. J. Johnson, a noted California photographer who first came West for the Gold Rush. Before becoming a photographer he worked as a one-man band. After living in Feather River, Grass Valley (1863), and Nevada (1868), he moved to Eureka where he opened a photographic business. By 1881, he had settled in Monterey, becoming the official photographer for the Hotel del Monte. Johnson's photographic gallery was located on Alvarado Street.

The present four photographs are elegantly presented on their original black card mounts, with gilt lettered captions. All bear the photographer's name: C. W. J. Johnson, Photographer, Monterey, Cal.:

  • The Lone Cypress. Cypress Drive.
  • Entrance to the Arizona Garden at Hotel del Monte.
  • The Lone Cypress. Cypress Drive.
  • Old Cypress Trees at Cypress Point.

The Monterey cypress is found naturally only on the California Central Coast, with small populations near Carmel, at Cypress Point in Pebble Beach, and at Point Lobos.
