Description

Detailed map representation of the region surrounding Vladivostok, published by the UK War Office, which in turn is based the best available Russian military maps.

The map primarily covers the area between Peter the Great Bay, Lake Khanka, and the Muren River, presenting a comprehensive view of the region's topography, natural features, and human-made infrastructure.

One of the notable features of the map is its presentation of the transportation and communications infrastructure network, including roads, telegraphs, post tracks, and the railway system. The roads are classified according to their quality and importance, and the map displays the location of telegraph lines alongside them. Post tracks, vital for communication in the region, are also indicated.

The railway system is prominently featured, including the final eastern portion of Trans-Siberian Railway that passes through Vladivostok. This railway serves as a crucial transportation artery, connecting the Russian Far East to the rest of the country and providing access to vital resources.

Topographical details are a key aspect of the map, with detailed shading employed to indicate elevation changes and provide a sense of the region's varied terrain. Rivers, lakes, and other water bodies are clearly marked.

Rarity

The map is rare, this being the only example we can locate to come to market.

We note examples at the British Library, National Library of Scotland, German State Library in Berlin and University of Oxford.
