Rare early map of the island of Guadeloupe, published in Jean Baptiste Du Tertre Histoire generale des Antilles habitées par les Francois . . .  

Engraved by François de La Pointe, this is one of the earliest printed maps of the island.

Du Tertre was sent by the Dominicans as a missionary to the Antilles, where he stayed from 1640 until 1658. His book was described by Sabin as "One of the most valuable [works] we possess on the West Indies."  The work is scarce, the final volume, issued in 1671 with additional maps, is very quite rare.

This sheet from Benedetto Bordone's Isolario, first published in Venice in 1528, presents three early woodcut maps of the Lesser Antilles in the West Indies, printed on both sides of a single sheet with Italian text on the verso and recto. The maps capture the islands of Guadeloupe, Martinique, and several other key locations in the Leeward Islands, just 42 years after Christopher Columbus's initial arrival in the New World. These maps are among the first printed representations of the Caribbean islands of St. Martin and Guadeloupe, highlighting the nascent European understanding of these territories during the early 16th century.
