Native American Portrait Photograph by Identified Pioneer Kansas Photographer

A nice CDV photograph of a young Native American man, possibly a Kansa or Kickapoo. The man is seated, sporting an eagle feather as headgear, with a blanket wrapped around his legs. The photographer is identified on the verso of the mount: N. F. Ames, Emporia, Kan.

N. F. Ames was active as a photographer in Emporia, Kansas during the late 1870s. Ames's gallery was located at No. 170 Commercial St. in Emporia, which advertised specialties of portraits and landscape work.

Condition Description
Original albumen photograph, on card mount (CDV format). Some slight soiling (mostly in lower right of mount). Age-toning. Overall very good. Early manuscript note on verso: "To Charity Cook."
