Including A Cellular Phone Store in 1985!

Lively pictorial advertising bird's eye view style map of Walnut Creek California, published by "Your Town Posters Ltd." and "Illustrated by David Ross."

The map is filled with over 100 local advertisements, offering a time capsule image of Walnut Creek in 1985.  Advertisers include the ususal timeless businesses, such as restaurant, car dealerships, real estate agents, salons, veterinarians,  florists, auto repair shops, hardware stores, dry cleaners and other retails businesses.  MacDonalds, Century 21, and Mobil are among the national brands shown.

Mixed in with the usual businesses are a host of 1980s staple merchants representing a bygone era, including:

  • Copy and Printing Centers (at least 6!)
  • One Hour Photo Developing (1 Hr. Photo Express)
  • New & Used Bookstore  (Hooked on Books, New & Rare)
  • Vacuum Repair Shop
  • Travel Agency

Among the most unusual shops is the ONE coffee shop, Aromatica Coffee (there are now 6 Starbucks in downtown Walnut Creek alone).

But without doub, the most interesting business is the shown on Mt. Diablor Blvd, between the Vacuum Repair Shop and the Taqueria and around the corner from MacDonalds -- Telcom Business & Cellular Phones.

The first commercially available cellular phone was the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, which was approved for use by the FCC on September 21, 1983 and first offered for sale.  The first commercial wireless phone call was made on October 13, 1983. The first cellular phones were offered for sale in 1984, priced at $3,995 (about $11,000 in 2023).
