Description

19th-Century Manuscript Copy of an Apparently-Unrecorded American Revolution Land Bounty in Greenville, South Carolina, Granted Under Ephriam Mitchell.

Fascinating plat showing 200 acres granted to David Logan in Greenville, South Carolina, near the confluence of George's Creek and the Saluda River.

The land was granted to Logan as a reward for his service during the American Revolution, of which we were unable to locate any other mention. However, many of his relatives participated in the Battle of King's Mountain, suggesting he might have been involved in this conflict as well.

The land grant was originally made in 1785 and surveyed by Thomas Loston, under the direction of Ephriam Mitchell, the Surveyor General of South Carolina. Mitchell is best known for his assistance to Mouzon in creating his eponymous map of the Carolinas, one the most important maps of the region from the American Revolution.

David Logan

Four brothers from the Logan family are recorded as early settlers of the North and South Carolina border area from as early as the 1760s, having moved there from Halifax County. Given his presence on this land document, David Logan, recorded only as a relative of the first four brothers recorded as being in Halifax County in 1763, likely moved alongside them. The four aforementioned brothers all participated in the Battle of King's Mountain in 1780, and it is possible that David Logan joined them. Joseph Logan, one of the first four brothers, is listed as having lived in Greenville at some point before 1800, thus establishing a family connection to the city.
