Rare chart of the Coral Reefs on the Western Pacific, Australia, Southeast Asia, etc., by noted French scientist and oceanographer Louis Joubin.

This is one of the earliest printed maps to focus on the location, locating coral formation both above and below the surface of the ocean.

Louis Marie Adolphe Olivier Édouard Joubin Biography

Louis Joubin was a professor at the Muséum of Natural History in Paris. He published works on nemerteans, chaetognatha, cephalopods, and other molluscs.

Joubin began as an assistant to Henri de Lacaze-Duthiers, before becoming director of the laboratories at Banyuls-sur-Mer (1882) and Roscoff (1884).   He later served an instructor at the University of Rennes, where in 1903 succeeded Edmond Perrier as the National History Museum department chair for Molluscs, etc. 

In 1906 he was chosen by Albert I, Prince of Monaco to be in charge of instruction at the French Oceanographic Institute.

In 1905 he was named president of the French Zoological Society.  In 1920 he became a member of the Académie des Sciences.
