Description

18th-century engraving showing Elisha curing the waters of Bethel, combined with an intriguing road map of the Holy Land in the vicinity of Jerusalem and the Dead Sea.

The image shows the passage from Kings 2:2 in which Elisha cures the waters of Bethel by adding salt. Above is a map showing the distances between various cities around Jerusalem, including Bethel, Jericho, Philadelphia, and the Dead Sea.

This engraving was made following the artist Johann Melchior Fussli for Johann Jacob Scheuchzer's Kupfer-Bibel, an important five-volume commentary on the bible published in Augsburg and Ulm in 1731.
