Rare French map of America, published by Antoine de Fer in Paris.
Based largely on Jansson's map of America from Atlas Minor, 1628, the most dominant feature of the map is the curious depiction of the west coast of North America, which is completely bisected by an unnamed straight (Northwest Passage), possibly derived from reports of Juan de Fuca's disputed voyage.
In this example, there is both the usual Strait of Anian and an unusual "Estroit de Iesso" (Strait of Japan) at the west side of the massive land bridge between North America and Asia. These features were derived from the Van den Keere and Plancius globe of 1614. A very clear Northwest Passage is also shown.
Other interesting features include the St. Lawrence River flowing from a small lake in the West and no Great Lakes.
The map includes a number of mythical islands in the Atlantic, including Brasil, Frislande and an I das Maidas.
