Description

Etching and engraving of two plans for the rebuilding of London following the 1666 Great Fire from Sir John Evelyn, a 17th-century writer, horticulturist, and founding member of the Royal Society, who had also written about the catastrophe. Evelyn had traveled throughout France, Italy, and the Low Countries in the 1640s, during England's Civil War, and was inspired by the more formal layouts of some of the continental cities when he proposed his plans. Neither plan came to fruition due to complications with the expense and land ownership in the area.

Condition Description
Some foxing, mostly confined to margins. Small tear in upper left margin and partially into border.
