A View of New York City From the South
Scarce early view of New York City, published in New York by Henry I. Megarey.
The view captures the city from the south, the fortifications of Governor's Island to the right.
Dear refers to the Hudson River Port Folio as among ''the finest collections of New York State views ever published'' (Deak). . William Guy Wall, the artist, was born in Dublin in 1792. In 1820 he painted the originals of these views, five of which are now in the New-York Historical Society. Apparently, there was a delay in publication which would account for the lack of a general title. Presumably more plates were issued singly later which explains the irregular numbering of some plates and text leaves in 1828 under the auspices of G. & C. H. Carvill N.Y. Another series was published in London in 1830 and 1831 by Hinton and Simpkin and Marshall.
The last complete set of the portfolio sold for $88,000 at Christie's in 1983. A group of 10 plates sold at Sotheby's in 2005 for $54,000.
