Description

Aerial Photographic Mapping of One of the Defining Events of the 20th Century.

A poignant pair of contemporary photographs showing Hiroshima before and after it was largely destroyed by the Little Boy atomic bomb on August 6, 1945.

The photos are oriented with south at the top, the harbor of Hiroshima is just outside the top border of the images. The famous Atomic Bomb Dome can be seen to the lower left of the center of the image. The post-strike photographs were taken on the day of the bombing, and smoke from fires on the ground can still be seen.

One might expect the photographs to be smaller, given their subject and era of production, but they are quite large. They were produced with a photo-compositing method popular for aerial photographs at the time whereby multiple images were physically stitched together to then be turned into another photograph.

Provenance

Julian Wolf, Technical Sergeant, who served at the Military Tribunal Far for the Far East, Tokyo, April-November 1946. He brought the photographs to San Francisco when he was discharged;
Thence by descent in his family;
Purchased from the Wolf family after which they were sold to us.
