Description

"On October 4, 1957 the world witnessed an event that can be compared only with the subjugation of fire or the mastery of atomic energy -- Man penetrated the Cosmos."

Fascinating Soviet propaganda pamphlet poster celebrating the success of the first artificial Earth satellite, Sputnik, which was launched by the Soviet Union in October of 1957.

This pamphlet was produced for the English-language audience of the Brussels Universal and International Exposition in 1958. It features numerous inset images, some in the Socialist Realist style, as well as maps and captions illustrating the history and general concepts of launching an artificial satellite.

The launch of Sputnik was not initially used for propaganda purposes, but it was shortly followed by the launch of a second Sputnik satellite, at which point the program became the centerpiece of a massive, international Soviet public relations campaign. The revelation of the success of the program caused a crisis in the United States, with much soul-searching revolving around the nation's inability to keep up with the U.S.S.R. technologically. This also coincided with the failure of the initial American attempts to launch a similar satellite (TV-3).

The pamphlet was produced by the Soviet publishing organization Внешторгиздат.
