Description

Detailed pictorial map of Jerusalem, published in 1955.

The map provides a detailed treatment of Israel, with pictorial vignettes illustrating major points of interest, further described by the extensive text on the verso.

A decorative and quite detailed street map, with vignettes creating a bird's eye view of major roads and urban blocks, with individual depictions of important buildings. Attention is also paid to the surrounding countryside, with markings to indicate elevation. Some original points of settlement are marked: German Colony, Greek Colony, American Colony, Russian Compound, etc. T

The red line dividing Israel and Jordan, and creating East and West Jerusalem, was the result of the ceasefire agreement which ended the Arab-Israeli War of 1948 and established the boundary which existed until 1967.  Known as the "Green-Line", it was the result of a hastily arranged ceasefire which saw and Israeli and Jordanian commanding officer meet and quickly agree on a ceasefire line.  The ambiguity of the line set forth in the field between the two officers was never resolved and resulted in a no-man's land between the two sides which lasted several decades.

The present map locates a demilitarized zone.

This is the second of Steimatsky's pictorial maps of Jerusalem, following and edition of 1967.
