A Rare Chart of the History of Mexico
Rare separately published historical chart of Mexico, published by Auguste Genin.
The chart includes 3 maps of Mexico, a modern map of Mexico in 1893, a map of the Ancient Kingdom Of Mexico as it existed in 1521 and a map of New Spain, illustrating Mexico prior to the loss of Texas and Upper California in the Mexican-American War (1846-48).
The broader theme of the map shows Mexico's modern leaders in larger portraits, with Porfirio Diaz at the top center, surrounded by his primary national leaders. The Governors of the various Mexican States ring the inner part of the chart. Inside the ring of governors is arrayed a series of historical vignettes and the portraits of all the rulers of Mexico from earlier times
French businessman Auguste Génin was also fascinated with Mexico and Mexican culture, dedicated to the study of Mexican culture. In 1892, he served as "chargé de mission" in the Ministry of Public Education and Fine Arts conducting archaeological and public education research.
Rarity
The chart is apparently a unique survival. We find no record of any other examples of the map in any institutional collections.
