Description

Bird's-eye view of New York City with Battery Park in the foreground, painted by Wilhelm Heine and Julius Hermann Kummer.

A beautiful natural view of the city that was likely made from an actual balloon that was tethered to Governor's Island. The Battery is still shown in the water, by 1857 it had been filled in.

Major landmarks are shown with some disproportion, but in all the iamge is a remarkable depiction of Manhattan. In the northern part of the view, the contours of the coastline can ge seen before landfill and commerce reshaped the natural features of the island.

The copyright was issued to W. Schaus in London.

Goupil was the largest printseller in the world, based in Paris, with offices in New York, London and Berlin advertised on this map.
