Description

Unrecorded English Map of the North Polar Sea, by Addison & Co., Globe Makers to His Majesty

Detailed map of the North Polar regions, illustrating the recent English discoveries in search of the North West Passage.

The discoveries made by various English explorers are noted as follows:

  • Ross (red)
  • Parry's First Voyage (Green)
  • Franklin (Blue)
  • Scoresby (Yellow)
  • Parry's Second Voyage (Pink)

The shading of the regions "discovered" is unusual, as most similar maps of the period tended to show the tracks of the expeditions.

The map is apparently unrecorded. We found no record of the map in any institutional collection, dealer or auction record or on-line record. Addison was one of the major globe makers in London in this period, but we find no indication that Addison published any individual maps.
